Site resdesign: New page
This is a new page added as part of the 2010 site redesign, see homepage for details.
Whilst working on the redesign I will endeavour to avoid broken links and blank pages, however there will be a transition period during which the same information may be presented on more than one page.

HOn30 is close in size to OO9, but uses a scale of 3.5mm/1ft rather than 4mm/1ft, which results in a HOn30 model being 7/8ths the size of the same item modelled in OO9. A far more significant difference between the two scales is in how they are used, in that OO9 is usually used for models of British rolling stock, whilst HOn30 is used mainly for North American prototypes.

For completeness here I should also mention HOe, which I do not currently model in, but which is actually just a different name for the same scale/gauge as HOn30. Due to the locations where this name is in common use it is usually associated with models of rolling stock from mainland Europe.

As is the case for OO9 there are very few items available ready to run, so working in this scale does imply some kit building or scratch building for both freight cars and locomtives. The freight car pages provide further detail of the options available for constructing rolling stock, and also step by step details for scratchbuilding a wooden flatcar.

All The HOn30 rolling stock which I am currently building is designed for layouts set in the same location and timeframe - a New England line set around 1940. This allows me to model not only accuarate representation of the stock that was actually used in the later years of these lines, but also to model 'what if' vehicles to represent the likely modernisation of the operating fleets if the lines had continued in profit. The timeframe also gives me the chance to model diesels as well as steam locomotives - as for my OO9 fleet I am planning to start with diesels because they are easier to model to get something running, but to then later add stream locomotives to the fleet.

My current fleet does not include any passenger vehicles because all the layouts I have planned are freight only, but that may change with further layout I do have planned which would include a need for passenger cars and also some of the railcars used by the New England lines.

I have used the same DG couplers as for my OO9 stock, so not only can all HOn30 items be freely mixed they can also be run with OO9 stock or locomotives. This is in oppostion to most HOn30 modellers who mostly use DG couplers but I like DG couplers, am happy with their price and operation, and prefered to maintain compatability accross all my narrow gauge stock.
