OUR HISTORY           COMPANY DETAILS

  PRECISION LABELS

Operations began in June 2000, driven by a mission to make better quality products than those produced elsewhere and to produce innovative new solutions for serious modellers.

  PRECISION DECALS

Launched as a new branding for our range of water-slide decal products in January 2003. Primarily to avoid confusion with non-waterproof paper products.

  PRECISION 3D MODELS

We bought our first 3D printer and 3D scanner in 2014, upgrading the resolution in 2016 to keep pace with the new best resolution. We offer a custom printing and scanning service.

  PRECISION MARKETPLACE

A section of our website where we sell our 3D printed model parts, accessories and finished models made by other suppliers using our products since 2014.

Our Products

Most items have been designed and produced by John R Peck. Some were manufactured exclusively for us by third parties under license - such as the Flying Scotsman gold plated headboards in the L40* packs.

The very first pack of labels was, appropriately enough, L1 - for the BR Golden Arrow. We had seen some really rather poor attempts at the subject by a number of other manufacturers. There were efforts with dotty low resolution printing, incorrect colours and simplistic computer shape art work, all bearing little resemblance to the scale or pattern of the prototypes concerned. Not to mention the excessive cost of some of the purchases. Our solution was well received and is still the biggest selling pack in the labels range.

Significant sums have been invested in technology to deliver quality products. Applying the skills learnt from a career working in the computer industry, for various companies including ten years for IBM. Only the best equipment is used - for example printers with the highest resolutions available. On-going study of materials results in ever improving finishes and features in our products. Water-proof plastics, magnetic labels, and even metallic finishes. Our waterslide decals employ unique features to deliver filmless no-carrier transfers as well as traditional clear-film backed forms.

We make competetive product purchases on a regular basis, and if we can't make something significantly better, we don't make anything like it. We never copy other people's product designs - only the original prototypes.

Collaborative Efforts

Initially we sold our range through the The Model Centre chain - based then at the Trafford Centre in Greater Manchester. However, we now have links with the other select outlets, listed on the home page. For several years we appeared monthly in Railway Modeller magazine within the Frizinghall Models & Railways advert - we must thank them for stocking almost everything that we produce, which is a lot these days!

Subject to a take-over and later management buy out, the re-formed TMC, powered as ever by Chris Yates, still work with us on special edition items. They use our custom engine nameplates & car numberplates regularly. One special edition we developed with TMC, under license to the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust, was of the Peppercorn A1 "Tornado" 60163, one of which was presented to Prince Charles on the occassion of the engine naming in 2009.

In September 2016 we started sharing pictures on Instagram showing models made by our customers and our latest developments:

Over the years we have been helped in researches by many people, in particular: Roger Keen (Keen Systems), Terry Bye (Pullman Society) and David Wright (NRM).

2003 saw links with Damian Moss, who produces several private sale items for restoring older no longer produced models. The association led to some interesting niche items under the Precision Labels and Precision Decals brandings.

In 2004 we worked with Pete Waterman to develop products for his Just Like The Real Thing range of 7mm kits. Superior models indeed, certainly the leading brand for O-gauge. We created various headcode inserts to be issued with the modern kits.

In 2005 we were asked to produce items for professional resprays by Darren Sherwood (reviewer in various trade magazines) and for Heritage-N/That N Gauge Company for custom projects. A number of OO packs were rescaled and several entirely new offerings created to broaden our offerings in other scales.

The trade press have always been helpful and encouraging to us. George Dent, working for Model Rail magazine, painted our G-scale Colas Rail Class 66 which then made it to the cover page of issue 163 for December 2011 and featured in his book on airbrush technique - it's always great to see our products being put to use by reviewers. Our thanks also go to the unsolicited efforts of magazines like Rail Express, who regularly mention our latest modern traction releases in their news column, we are reaching ever more modellers.

We continue to be inspired by requests and contributions from keen modellers that get in touch every week. We're very grateful for the regular mentions by our customers on various forums. To name but a few of our most well known customers, in alphabetical order:
  • Alexander Carpenter who gets us to make things for prototype models to appear in coming Bachmann catalogues,
  • Andi Walshaw of Cairns Road Works fame has provided advance news of several new liveries we've been first to then produce decals for,
  • Dan Harrison of Network Evolution uses all manner of decals we create for his model bus creations,
  • James Venables with his impressive 7mm models has inspired us to up-scale several offerings,
  • Jon Gavin of Peak Dale Works keeps up busy producing custom numbers most weeks, as well as printing lots of modern image details for his re-finishing work - a pair of his perfect model engines shown below,
