In May 1985, twenty-two Derby built MkIIIB coaches were turned out as 48 seat modern first-class "InterCity Pullman" parlour cars. Centrally marked with the final form of the famous Pullman coat of arms, most of these were also named, some following local competitions. They initially entered service as part of the Merseyside (Liverpool) and Manchester Pullman trains. Kitchen facilities were provided in "InterCity Pullman Restaurant" branded buffets, again with arms centrally placed. Other "Executive" livery standard class coaches were also included in the rakes, with only undecorated "InterCity" branding. Power was provided by Class 86 or 87 engines. Trains ran like this until 1991, when the names started to be removed.
Hornby have released many suitable models over the years, including the latest R2787 Class 87. Coaches R4294A in the 2008 catalogue are ideal for the Pullman cars, with R4295A and R4296A to make up the rest of a typical rake - the "Swallow" style itallic "INTERCITY" markings will need to be removed and replaced.
Lima released five Pullman coach models in 1987, L305374-8, with one of those being a duplicate number with the pre-naming version of 11091 "Sir Stanley Matthews", the other names were 11076 "John Lennon", 11085 "Sir John Barbirolli" and 11093 "L.S. Lowry".
