D8-4A/.../#     OO 4MM CLASS 08 & 09 NAMEPLATES £6.99/£7.99

Following suggestions made on a forum, we have put together a collection of the Tinsley Class 08 and 09 unofficial hand-painted names for 4mm OO-gauge. Including the Tinsley rose, various shed plates, engine numbers, data panels and the Tinsley snail where appropriate.

Twenty-eight name options so far - there are a few more we can model if close up photographs come to light of these modern traction engines:
08492 "HALLAM" (the later name for "BARNSLEY"), 08500 "THOMAS", 08514 "HENRY"/"HENGIST", 08581 "IMOGEN", 08661 "MERCIAN" and 08887 "THUNDERBIRD" (also the name of a Class 47 engine).

Each pack includes:
  • Three sets of side decals - one spare,
  • Using clear waterslide film backing,
  • All the details to re-name and re-number a Class 08 or 09 shunter model.
One pack for the final version of "ESCAFELD", when fitted with painted thick cast plates, includes etchings to mount the decal names. The etching are steel so that it is possible to fix them magnetically.

Simply cut roughly around the transfers, soak in water for less than a minute until the clear film floats off the backing, and slide on to the model. Remember clear film decals work best on glossy surfaces. When dry, we recommend you varnish seal the details to protect them.

Click on the images to enlarge a view of some of the options. Those are actual scans of the printed decals, on their pale blue backing, with the brightness toned down to make the white printing more visible here.

With one exception, the names were all painted on the side access panels, just ahead of the BR double arrows. The Tinsley rose was usually centred on the door, although for 08210 "TUXFORD" the bottom of the name was vertically centred. You will need to remove the original numbers on the model before fitting the replacement decals - usually some methylated or white spirits on a cotton bud will lift off white printing. For 08543 "ROTHERWOOD" and also 08878 "GRIMESTHORPE", the added Tinsley snail was painted on the lower oval rivetted plate next to the cab side. The black numbered 08509 "WATH E.T.D" had numbers just above the oval plate instead of on the cab side, the name was in the usual position. "ESCAFELD" (the olde-English name for Sheffield) carried its numbers on the side of the box directly under the name, instead of on the cab side where silver BR arrows were fitted - the nose was without ladders. For one version of the name, "ESCAFELD" was carried as unique cast plates.

Each of the names modelled here are suitable for the standard BR blue paint livery, with the exceptions of:
  • D8-4E - The black numbered version of 08509 "WATH E.T.D." for a 2-tone grey livery,
  • D8-4Z - The current version of "THE TYKE" 08745 another 2-tone grey livery, and
  • D8-4T and D8-4t - Heritage green versions of 08691 "ESCAFELD".
Hornby, Lima and Bachmann have all made OO scale models of the 08 type shunters. We also sell the same names in O-gauge, ideal for Bachmann's brass kit - see the separate D8-7* page.

In the ordering tables below we note the naming date and key body features that we have seen in pictures of the engines as follows:
  • B - left side nose end box fitted
  • T - Middle boxes on both sides
  • A - Cab end box on left side of cab
  • ? - Unknown if boxes by cab, photo only of right hand side
  • - - Boxes not fitted
  • R - Cab doors have an indented rectangular panel
  • S - Smooth faced cab doors
For example:
Hornby's BR Blue 08402 (R2418) and weathered 08419 (R2591), plus Green yellow nose D3200 (R2589) were "BT-R".
The silver cab roof BR Blue 08528 (R2418) is a "BTAR" form.
Hornby's two-tone grey "DICK HARDY" model 09012 (R2419) was "BTAS" - not ideal for "WATH E.T.D.".
Bachmann's BR Blue 08243/08375 (32-111/A) were "BT-R", along with an earlier weathered club model of 08507 (32-102Z).
BR Blue 08623 (32-102) matched "BT-S".
Ladders can be removed on green yellow nose models D3729 (32-101) & D3336 (32-112), both "BT-R"
- needing cab end boxes to make an "ESCAFELD".

There have been two development batches of the decals - each is tabulated in number order below.

  Three 08 Name Options.
Blue shows through 08871's clear "Ti".

Three More 08 Names.
